4th of July is just around the corner and there are all sorts of activitied to keep you entertained in the area.  One of my personal favorite activities this time of year is the Suncoast Offshore and related events.  Information on these events can be found at http://www.suncoastoffshore.org.

Powerboats By The Bay:  July 4, 10am - 10pm & July 5, 10am - 10pm
(Hint: park at Ed Smith Stadium and take the bus for $1 per person to the pits)

Sunday July 6:  Annual Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix Boat Race - Lido Beach
There will be 2 heats (races) at 11am and 1pm
(Hint:  Get there early because this event will be packed)

Firecracker 5K Run - Dallas White Park starts at 7:30 am

4th of July Parade - Starts at Appomattox and North Port Blvd. at 10 am

Freedom Festival and Fireworks - North Port High School - Doors open at 6 pm

There have been some new things going on in the North Port area.  Here are some of the most important, please feel free to add anything you think would be helpful to the local residents.

City of North Port approves a mandatory recycling ordinance!  Finaly North Port has joined forced with the surrounding cities by going green and requiring it's residents to recycle.  This will save the city a lot of money and allow them to generate income off of the recycled goods.  For more information please visit:  http://www.cityofnorthport.com/news/news_item.asp?NewsID=877

Hurricane season is back!  Get prepared now, starting with a free case of water from the City of North Port!  Participate in a hurricane drill on Thursday, June 5th at the San Pedro Catholic Church at 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port.  The drill will last approximately from 9am until noon.  For more information visit:  http://www.cityofnorthport.com/news/news_item.asp?NewsID=883

Firecracker 5K Run!  The City of North Port is hosting it's second annual Firecracker 5k Run.  It will begin at 7:30 am on July 4, 2008 at Dallas White Park.  Registration is $12 before June 29 or $15 after June 29.  For more information visit:  http://www.cityofnorthport.com/news/news_item.asp?NewsID=864

Sumter Blvd Almost Complete!  Starting May 28th workers began laying the last layer of asphalt on Sumter Blvd.  They are expected to have it completed in the first of June!  No more huge bumps to watch out for!  Please be aware of the lane closures while the construction finishes up.

Real estate market update:  We have been seeing an increase in sales, there were 256 residential home sales in the Charlotte Area MLS for the month of May, 90 of those from the city of North Port, compared to the 75 closings for North Port in the same time period from 2007.  Now is the time to buy, sales are picking up and there are many homes on the market for less than $100,000.  This will not last forever, millionaires will be made from this market!
